An automotive design legend passes away: Sergio Pininfarina.
Not long after the passing of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and Carroll Shelby, Sergio Pininfarina, a man known for brilliant coach design over the past five decades, son of Pininfarina founder Battista Farina nicknamed “Pinin” born in Cortanze (Asti), passed away jul 2 2012 during the night in his Turin home after a long illness.
Pininfarina, who was aged 85 at his death (was born in 1926 in Turin), has been involved with the legendary Italian design house his father founded for more than 40 years and was responsible for some of the firm’s greatest works: Ferrari, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, RR, FIAT, Cadillac, Ford, and more. Was a master of Italian automotive design.
During II WW he began work on airplanes and learn the art of shapes and metal sheets treatments in the factory of his father. Graduated in 1950 at mechanical engineering department of the Polytechnic of Torino but would only start work in the family firm several years later he initially undertook the responsibility of general manager, before becoming managing director in 1961 and chairman of the company after his father’s death in 1966.
Appointed senator for life for great contribution to Italian society by then Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in 2005, Sergio Pininfarina was chairman of Confindustria from 1988 to 1992.
He is survived by his wife, Giorgia, his daughter, Lorenza, and his son, Paolo, who is the current Pininfarina chairman. Sergio Pininfarina had another son, Andrea, who sadly passed awa in 2007 from his injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident.
The funeral will be celebrated jul 6 in the church of SS Angeli Custodi in Turin.
